Campaigners in Cheshire have taken the next step in their fight against gas production in Ellesmere Port.

Ellesmere Port Frack Free and Frack Free Upton dispatched the first batch of documents in their case against IGas plans to test for gas at its well at Portside.

The boxes are heading for the Planning Inspectorate which is organising a public inquiry on the proposals, due to open on 15 January 2019.

Cheshire West and Chester Council refused planning permission to IGas for the flow test  in January 2018. The company appealed in July 2018.

The two campaign groups have been granted what is called Rule 6 status, which allows them to call evidence and cross-examine witnesses at the inquiry.

A spokesperson for Frack Free Upton said:

“The package we are sending off today represents countless hours of unpaid work, and there is still much work to be done, but as long as this threat is hanging over us our determination will not waver.”

A spokesperson for Ellesmere Port Frack Free said:

“We have assembled an excellent team or witnesses, including a top barrister, to defend the Council’s decision.

“Our witnesses will be  challenging IGas on the issues that local people raised in their objections, such as air quality, potential water contamination and the close proximity of the well to industrial units and houses.

“We are just ordinary residents who cannot stand by and let this damaging and polluting industry into our communities unchallenged. According to IGas estimates, the flaring operation will create up to 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Just when the world needs to take urgent action on climate change this is unacceptable.”

The groups have set up a fundraising page
