Frack Free Lancashire described her as an “anti-fracking hero” and a “powerhouse of fire” at the centre of the anti-fracking community in Lancashire.

As an independent councillor for Warton and Westby, Cllr Brickles opposed Cuadrilla’s shale gas operation in the region, particularly at Preston New Road, near Blackpool.

In 2022, more than 10 years after first hearing about fracking, she said she had attended hundreds of meetings held by both sides of the debate.

She represented Westby with Plumptons Parish Council at the 2016 public inquiry into Cuadrilla’s fracking plans. Later, she took part in roadside protests against the company’s operation at Preston New Road and in 2017 she was found guilty, along with two other Lancashire councillors, of obstructing the highway.

She said she had been stalked and threatened for her views but she refused to give up, saying:

“I will continue to oppose fracking in Fylde, the country and the world. I shall continue to speak out on climate change, I shall continue to protest whatever that maybe (standing roadside with a placard or direct action).”

She added:

“I will continue to be a voice for Warton and Westby when I represent them in meetings, I shall continue to be outspoken, but I will never accept the abuse again.”

Cllr Brickles served on Fylde Council for 13 years and on Westby-with Plumptons parish council for 15 years.

She became well known for her many community activities, described as a “councillor of the people”.

In a statement, Frack Free Lancashire said:

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved friend and anti-fracking community stalwart, Julie Brickles, following a long period of illness.

“Julie was our powerhouse of fire at the centre of the anti-fracking community here in Lancashire, working tirelessly for her community in her role as an independent councillor, and using her (often loud) voice to strive for social justice on the Fylde, including taking direct action against the fracking industry.

“Known locally for her crafty creations, from bespoke crochet blankets, quilts and shawls, to carnival costumes and Steampunk magic, Julie was a loyal friend and helped those in need without hesitation. Her regular cooking and baking for environmental protectors during the years of campaigning against fracking was legendary, as was her regular cooking for her local community in times of need.

“As a solid community member, Julie was integral to the Bloomin’ Warton team, working on beautiful floral displays and the upkeep of plant life across the village; manning the community library and continually supporting the local Food Bank with generous donations. Julie was a real community-minded woman, wanting to take care of whoever needed help.

“Julie was a loving wife, a proud mum to her five children and a devoted grandmother. We send our love and support to her family and friends, now and in the months to follow.

“Please respect the family’s privacy as they mourn their loss.

“Our hearts will always carry the spirit, love and unending generosity of our formidable friend, Julie Brickles.”

Cllr Peter Collins, Leader of the Independents, said:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend and fellow Independent Councillor Julie Brickles.

“I have known Julie since she was first elected to Fylde Council in 2011 and she soon became a very loyal and trusted friend. She was down to earth, practical, no-nonsense and very much hands on in all she did.

“She was a very able councillor, determined and tenacious, who would not give up on an issue about which she felt strongly, she was an excellent campaigner.

“Julie was very well respected and will be missed by councillors and officers alike at Fylde as well as by the community of Warton which she represented so well.

“I am sure all our thoughts are with her husband, Michael, and all her family at this sad time.”

Cllr Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said:

“We are all devastated to hear the news of Cllr Julie Brickles’ passing. Julie was a dedicated and passionate member of our council, and her contributions to the community were invaluable. I know I speak for everyone when I say she will be profoundly missed.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends, and everyone who loved her during this difficult time.”

Blackpool and Fylde Green party described Cllr Brickles as “a magnificent woman, genuine spirit of community and a drive to resolve injustice – we couldn’t have admired her more”.

Fylde Labour Party and the local Conservatives said she was a “strong advocate” for her local community. Fylde Lib Dems described her as “an amazing campaigner for her area”.
