A committee of MPs is launching a new inquiry on the future of the UK’s oil and gas industry.

The investigation covers both the smaller onshore industry, as well as the North Sea.
The energy security and net zero committee is now inviting evidence from a wide range of interests, including in the onshore sector.
The committee is focusing on the role of oil and gas in the energy transition and how the move away from gas in home heating could be achieved.
The committee will assess the role of the government’s current policies and the risks of failing to deliver a just transition.
It also aims to identify additional policy mechanisms and institutions that may be needed.
Submissions of evidence should be no more than 3,000 words and address six issues on the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The deadline is 23.59 hours on Wednesday 7 January 2026.
