Well tests at Rathlin Energy’s exploration sites in East Yorkshire recovered oil and gas but did not achieve sustained flow rates, it was revealed today.
Statements from two partners in the West Newton operations said studies were now planned on potential reservoir stimulation to improve flow rates.
The companies said:
“The ‘Greater West Newton’ area has been confirmed to contain material resources. The method by which to produce this known accumulation of hydrocarbons is still being assessed.”
Their statements added:
“Gas and light oil/condensate were recovered to surface from the WNA-2 and WNB-1z wells, although sustained flow rates were not achieved, and multiple samples have been gathered for geochemical analysis which is currently underway.
“Over the coming weeks, a number of external studies, utilising the knowledge of specialist carbonate reservoir modelling energy consultants will be conducted, encompassing a wide range of potential reservoir stimulation treatments, the results of which could be applied to the West Newton series of wells, in order to achieve optimum flow rates.”
Sachin Oza, co-chief executive of Reabold Resources, said today:
“The test programme has provided us with an abundance of data which will now be used to establish the optimum drilling and completion techniques for oil and gas production at West Newton.”
He said the two wells were “available for stimulation” to achieve near term flow.
Rathlin Energy has consistently said it would not use high volume hydraulic fracturing at West Newton.
But correspondence between the company and East Riding of Yorkshire Council indicates that the company had considered low volume hydraulic fracturing.
This process, sometimes known as proppant squeeze, has been used at the Wressle oil site, operated by Egdon Resources in North Lincolnshire. Other stimulation options include the injection of acid into the rock formation.
West Newton oil and gas estimates cut
Rathlin Energy has estimated a total 412.3 million barrels of oil in place and 185.5 billion cubic feet of gas in the wider West Newton area.
On the West Newton-A and B sites, Rathlin has reduced liquids in place to 113 million barrels from 146 million barrels. Gas in place is now down at 50.6 billion cubic feet, from 211.5 billion cubic feet.
David Bramhill, Executive Chairman of Union Jack, said:
“The results from West Newton confirm substantial conventional onshore hydrocarbon discoveries.
“The Operator’s updated analysis of the best estimate in-place hydrocarbon volumes, aggregated across West Newton and the three largest prospects, highlights a significant proportion are liquids.”
Removal and refusal
Today’s news follows the removal of equipment from the West Newton-A site yesterday.
Last month, East Riding of Yorkshire Council refused planning permission for 20 years of oil production and six new wells at West Newton-A. Rathlin Energy has not yet said whether it will appeal.
In August 2021, Reabold Resources reported suspected formation damage at the West Newton-B1z well.
Today’s statements said data collected from the wells included downhole logs, pressure information and geochemical and core analysis. This would be used to inform the drilling of the next well, for which there is planning permission at West Newton-B.
The new well would be designed to deliver an optimal flow rate from the Kirkham Abbey formation, the statements said.
