The UK confirmed new licences this morning allowing oil and gas companies to explore in parts of the North Sea previously allocated for offshore wind power.
The UK’s biggest energy supplier, Centrica, has announced plans to turn the site of a former gas-fired power station in North Yorkshire into a battery storage plant.
The would-be fracking firm, Third Energy, has been acquired by a renewables company, which plans to use old gas wells to generate geothermal energy.
The COP26 president, Alok Sharma, declared this morning: “I do believe that the end of coal is in sight. I do believe that we are getting to a point we can consign coal power to history.”
A committee of MPs has suggested the government policy of increased use of gas fired power stations will make it hard for the UK to meet carbon reduction targets by 2030.
