Keep calm & Frack on!!
Fracking in the UK is dead. The ‘bridge to renewables’ argument may have had some validity a few years ago but eight years on from the first frack, the bridge is now much sorter – at both ends. In fact it is too short.
The future is in insulation, efficiency, renewable energy and energy storage.
There are still many bridges to cross – a few random comments…
1. Personally I would like to see just about every National Park in this country turned over to near their natural state, that is at least 50% broadleaf forest which would be not only attractive but provide a enormous carbon sink. The Lake District, for example, has been described by George Monbiot as a sheep created wasteland. It is naturally a forested area.
2. The National Grid said that replacing gas central heating with electric would require a threefold increase in electricity consumption. Insulation may play a part in reducing that figure but we will need a vast store of backup energy for windless nights. The two most likely sources of this zero carbon energy are nuclear, or hydrogen (emission free) which can be produced by cracking natural gas into Hydrogen and Carbon. The Carbon can be solidified and stored.
3. I have not yet seen any viable alternative to heavy lorry transportation, it is said that battery production to replace all the vehicles on U.K. roads with battery power would require all the cobalt currently in production in the world. That shows the scale of the problem.
4. And in the end this massive dislocation of the UK’s economy will have ZERO effect on climate change because the U.K.’s contribution to carbon emissions is tiny compared to China, India, the US and Russia. China is an interesting example, there urban pollution (as in 1950’s London) is massive political driver, climate change simply is not, so their solution (as in London) is to replace coal heating with natural gas. Overall however their energy use, with that of India, will rise massively with economic expansion.
Yes indeed if we had got on with fracking 8 years ago we would have be having 52 week coal free periods now, not 2 week periods.
Greenpeace Lunacy, they have gone too far!!

Yes there’s a word for “a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.”.
Sorry a bit emotive, maybe just well financed, middle-class, single minded activists.
