Three key areas account for most of the first new onshore licences to explore for oil and gas announced today by the government. Of the 27 unveiled at lunchtime, eight are in Lincolnshire, nine in Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire, and four between Sheffield and Leeds.

A planning inspector has ruled that the oil and gas company, Europa, should be allowed to carry out exploratory drilling in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Leith Hill in Surrey.

Dart Energy has dropped its appeal over plans to drill for coal bed methane near Ellesmere in Shropshire. The company’s owners, IGas, also announced today it was abandoning the site. As expected, Cuadrilla is to appeal against the refusal of its two applications to frack in the Fylde area of Lancashire. Campaigners said the appeals disregarded local democracy and would put further pressure on residents.
The latest government information shows five onshore oil and gas wells were completed in the UK in first half of 2015. This is two fewer than for the same time last year and four down on 2013.
