  1. Just a note that tonight (2nd Feb) wind is generating over a quarter of our electricity, and biomass 7%, so taken together renewables generate about a third of our lecky. But just two weeks or so ago that proportion was down to about 6% during a very windless spell of weather. I guess that suggests to me that gas, far from being the enemy of renewables, is in fact an invaluable partner, filling in the gaps in weather dependent supply.

  2. Today, Friday, 3rd Feb Npower has announced one of the largest price rises ever implemented by a large supplier – it will effect 1.4 million UK households.

On Friday, the gas and electricity giant revealed plans to raise standard tariff electricity prices by 15% from 16 March, and gas prices by 4.8%.

So more ordinary people in fuel poverty – let’s not beat about the bush, these rises are partly due to subsidies being paid to renewable energy suppliers. Is it worth it. You decide.
