Two Cuadrilla companies struck off

Two Cuadrilla subsidiaries have formally gone out of business.

Official notices were published this week for the dissolution of Cuadrilla Gainsborough Limited and Cuadrilla South Cleveland Limited.

Companies House, the government organisation which maintains the register of many UK businesses, said the companies were struck off the register on 30 June 2026. The dissolution date was 23 June 2026.

The news had been expected since January 2026, when accounts for both companies revealed they would cease trading.

Cuadrilla South Cleveland recorded a loss of £1,000 in its most recent accounts. Cuadrilla Gainsborough recorded no profit or loss.

Both companies were incorporated in August 2016.

Cuadrilla South Cleveland was the operator of licences PEDL288 and PEDL346, in East Yorkshire. Cuadrilla Gainsborough operated licence PEDL276 in South Yorkshire.

All three licences had been awarded in 2015 in the 14th round, the most recent onshore award.

All reached the end of their initial term in July 2024 without meeting commitments to drill wells or carry out seismic surveys. PEDL276 also failed to meet a commitment to frack a horizontal well.

The industry regulator, the North Sea Transition Authority, refused an extension to the initial terms of all three licences.

The dissolution reduced to nine the number of remaining companies in the Australian-owned Cuadrilla group.

This includes the two holding companies of subsidiaries carrying out exploration and appraisal of oil and gas licences (Cuadrilla Resources Limited and Cuadrilla Resources Holdings Limited). Another seven subsidiaries are linked to onshore operations.

Remaining 14th round licences

PEDLs 276, 288 and 346 were among 93 licences offered in the 14th round, at the height of government interest in fracking.

There are now just ten remaining 14th round licences.

Of these, there is a refused application for gas appraisal and lower volume fracking (PEDL343, Europa at Burniston, North Yorkshire) and one undecided application for gas exploration (PEDL347, Egdon Resources at Foxholes, North Yorkshire).

Eight other licences are in Stoke-on-Trent, Dorset and Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. None have current oil or gas applications or proposals.
