Anti-fracking opponents from across the country took part in a mass “dance-off” protest outside Cuadrilla’s shale gas site near Blackpool today.

The event, called Jig at the Rig, was organised by the national campaign group, Reclaim the Power. The group was behind yesterday’s blockade of the site off Preston New Road (DrillOrDrop report).

The event included a “live ceilidh of resistance”, poetry, pub quiz, fancy dress and speeches.

It is followed tomorrow by Reclaim the Power’s national gathering in Blackpool. Details

Lancashire Police said it had extra officers on duty today to, in its words, facilitate peaceful protest and the lawful business of the wider community.

In a statement issued yesterday, Cuadrilla’s Chief Executive, Francis Egan, said:

“We respect the right to lawful protest and ask Reclaim The Power to adhere to this and respect the right for local people, including our own employees and contractors, to go about their daily business without any hindrance.”

Starting in April, campaigners are planning three months of what they call “targeted resistance” in opposition to the Preston New Road site.

  1. Looks like the “hundreds expected” became lost on the way. Call for Donald Trump-I’m sure he could make it appear to be a crowd.

    • This looked like great fun, would have liked to have had a boogie with these happy people instead of listening to MC and his doom and gloom brigade whinging again!

Well done everyone, a lovely demo; next.

    • Talking rubbish again. Were you there Martin? I was and can assure you there were at least 200 people there.

  2. At a packed venue at a nearby telephone box, those supporting fracking could be heard singing,

‘Don’t be sad because……one out of eight ain’t bad’

    minority optimism to be applauded

    • I do hope Mr Trumps determination to extract every drop of fracked gas doesn’t cause OPEC to drop it’s prices and again force US shale to down tools.

The costs of UK shale are already higher than current market prices. If they drop lower UK shale would have to operate at even greater losses.

Hard to hide that for to long from already worried investors.

  3. It shows how desperate the antis are when John is brought forward to re-quote his anti economics.

Once again John, we can all research how the costs of fracking have declined in the USA as new techniques have been introduced in recent years. We can all see that speculation about UK costs to frack were done a long time ago before these techniques were developed by the industry.
And then of course there are the “worried investors”. Only ones I am aware of are those worried about whether the N.Sea would be able to compete. Cheer up John, I’m sure there is room for both, especially with reckless consumption of fossil fuels to bring the few from all over the country to PNR.

    • So the ‘the Office of the Director of National Intelligence,’ [US] are telling you that the Russians are influencing shale? And the evidence? Be careful TW, you may have one under your bed…….

    • Gosh, a Right leaning semi-factual opinion website accuses Russia of pulling the strings of the anti-fracking movement. There’s a surprise. By the same logic they (Russia) would be trying even harder to undermine the green energy movement which attempts to turn people away from fossil fuel dependency altogether. Funnily enough that’s what GBK, Martin and others (not to mention Trump) appear to be doing. Are they Putin’s puppets too?

  4. Except Martin doesn’t do that PhilipP. Fake news. Green energy is not a problem to me. Some systems I quite like, some I even follow in terms of where I spend my money, but I still recognise that some fossil fuels are part of the mix for a long time to come.

That is the weakness in your position. You have to make it an either/or argument to give the “more intelligent” argument traction. No wonder the not decided are not budging.

    • ‘ Green energy is not a problem to me. Some systems I quite like, some I even follow in terms of where I spend my money, but I still recognise that some fossil fuels are part of the mix for a long time to come.’

      – hallelujah! Now you’ve just got to work on what type of fossil fuels are acceptable in the mix and for how long and you will be able to join our team; look forward to it.

      There is hope.
Cue Star Wars theme 🙂 – back. emoji, back I say!

      • A Happy St Patrick’s Day to all; get out and let yeh hair down, for it may never happen again……

  5. Must have been a lot of police and security then Pauline! Perhaps the ‘photos showed so few as the others will filling up their vehicles ready for the drive home?
