Updated: UK onshore oil and gas production in charts – April 2024

Production fell at Wressle, the UK’s newest onshore oil producer, but rose at Saltfleetby, the country’s largest onshore gas producer.

Daily oil and gas production rates both dropped in April 2024, compared with the month before.

Vented gas from UK onshore oil fields continued to rise.

Daily gas production: 9.27 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) (March 2024: 10.59 mmscf/d

Gas volume: 7,874 thousand standard cubic meters (ksm3) (March 2024: 9,296 ksm3)

Gas weight: 6,462 tonnes (March 2024: 7,416 tonnes)

Onshore gas’s contribution to UK total production: 0.90% (March 2024: 0.91%)

Onshore oil’s contribution to UK total production: 1.86% (March 2024: 1.78%)

Volume of flared gas at UK onshore oilfields: 916ksm3 (March 2024: 1,086ksm3)

Volume of vented gas at UK onshore oilfields: 123ksm3 (March 2024: 114ksm3)

Number of onshore fields which recorded some oil production in April 2024:  31 (March 2024: 31)

Number of onshore sites which recorded some gas production in April 2024:  12 (March 2024: 14)

Number of onshore fields which recorded no oil production in April 2024:  12 (March 2024: 12)

Number of onshore sites which recorded no gas production in April 2024: 13 (March 2024: 11)

This article uses data compiled and published by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) on 1 July 2024 from reports by oil companies. This is published about three months in arrears. All the charts are based on the NSTA data.

Some data retrospectively changed in previous releases from NSTA. We have reported  where this has happened.

More than half of UK onshore vented gas in April 2024 was from just three fields: Kimmeridge, Beckingham and Horndean.

Ranking risers: Welton, Scampton North, Horndean, Long Clawson, Beckingham, Cold Hanworth, Gainsborough, Corringham

Ranking fallers: Singleton, Bletchingley, Humbly Grove, Kimmeridge

The biggest fall in volume between March and April 2024 was at Wytch Farm. But this was what would be expected from the shorter month in April.

Other fields, however, saw bigger than expected falls: Wressle (down 17%); Singleton (down 11%); Humbly Grove (down 70%); Wareham (down 14%); Horndean (down 8%); Scampton North (down 6%).

Producing gas fields

Ranking risers: Stillingfleet, Wheldale, Prince of Wales, Newmarket, Gedling

Ranking fallers: Bilsthorpe, Maltby, Cadeby, Bevercotes, Markham Main

No production was reported from Albury, in Surrey, which ranked 5th in February 2024.

Non-producers

Oil

The data shows there was no production at 12 UK onshore oil fields in March 2024. This was the same as March 2024.

The non-producing fields were:

  • Angus Energy: Brockham, Lidsey
  • Britnrg Limited: Newton-on-Trent
  • Heyco (formerly Egdon Resources): Dukes Wood, Fiskerton Airfield, Kirklington, Waddock Cross
  • Star Enery (formerly IGas): Avington, Egmanton, Nettleham, Scampton, South Leverton

Gas

There was no production reported at 13 UK onshore producing gas fields in April 2024.

The non-producing fields were:

  • Cuadrilla: Elswick
  • Heyco: Kirkleatham
  • EP UK Investments: Humbly Grove Gas Storage
  • Ineos: Airth, Doe Green
  • Infinis Energy: coal mine vents at Askern, Florence, Kings Mill Hospital, Mansfield, Sherwood, Whitwell
  • Scottish Power UK plc: Hatfield Moor Gas Storage Injection
  • Star Energy: Albury
