Updated: A man has spent 27 hours on top of a lorry leaving Rathlin Energy’s West Newton oil and gas exploration site in East Yorkshire.

The protest, known as lorry surfing, is the latest in five days of actions this week against drilling a second well at West Newton.

It began on the morning of  Thursday 6 June and ended this morning (7 June 2019).

He was arrested and interviewed by Humberside Police. DrillOrDrop has asked the police for details for charges.

Eye witnesses complained that the protester was refused food and water by police. His supporters were allegedly threatened with arrest if they provided food and water. We have asked Humberside Police to respond to these allegations and will update the post with any response.

At the start of the action, the protester said:

“After the recent declaration of a climate emergency without any concrete commitments or action,  coupled with the recent high court decision (Boyd, Corre vs INEOS) deeming slow walking lawful protest, which Humberside police have denied at every turn, I feel this is the only action I have left.”

Earlier this week, two women locked their arms together in a reinforced tube blocking the road outside the site. The protest, which began on the morning of 3 June 2019 ended after 38 hours. The women were arrested. We’ll update this post with details of charges when we have them.

  1. Only that clown [edited by moderator] would surf a truck conveniently at a passing place, achieving nothing as usual. #Another Own Gold

  2. “achieving nothing as usual” – seems to be a perfect achievement, protest against the “industry” whilst allowing local residents etc to continue to use the road.

  3. What a buffoon, i bet he was leaving bad reviews on the lorry companies facebook page at the same time!!

  4. It achieves 3 things , it raises awareness , it slows the industry and most importantly , it winds you lot up so much hahaha.

    • I agree. It raises awareness which has led to the stoppage of fracking for shale gas in the UK (I know that West Newton is not shale gas but you get my point), and slows the industry (which reduce shortens the ‘bridge to renewables’ they keep harping on about).

  5. [Edited by moderator], climbing on a lorry, or obstructing access, in order to stop people going about their lawful business has nothing to do with free speech.

  6. [Comments removed]

Several comments relating to D-Day have been removed from this thread.

A brief reminder of how comments work on DrillOrDrop. Unfortunately we don’t have the resources to constantly monitor comments, so we trust most contributors and allow comments to appear directly on the site without any checking by us first.
New contributors, and those who repeatedly break the house rules (https://drillordrop.com/drillordrop-comment-policy/) have to wait for their comments to be cleared.

We review comments on a regular basis (usually, though not always, several times a day)

The most effective way to deal with a comment that causes you concern is to email us directly at contact@drillordrop.com. Please indicate which comment is causing the problem, and why you find it troublesome. Again, we don’t have the capacity to respond instantly to complaints, but will deal with them as quickly as possible.

In this case, a lot of the problem appears to have been caused by an errant spell checker substituting fascist for fractivist.

From now on, all comments drawing parallels with fascists, Nazis, the Second World War or the Mafia will be removed in full.

  7. Same ole same ole.

I wonder who told these clowns that protest is defined as getting your own way, and if you don’t, you can stop anyone doing anything until you do get your own way?

It’s like watching toddlers having a tantrum.

    • It is “the toddlers” who will have to live with the effects of climate change and the sixth extinction event in the planets history, and all that exacerbated from increasing fossil fuel pollution unwise Mordred.

The “clowns” are those who cannot, or will not give them the future that they should expect and deserve.

Is it nice over there without DT?

  8. Not about freedom of opinion or expression. That could have been achieved standing on a box on the verge. This was about trying to cost a business money by preventing them operating.

Well, that can be easily costed. Be interesting to see if it is and recovered.

  9. Why would you ever want to spend 27 hours on top of a lorry? Achieved nothing positive. [Edited by moderator]
