Campaigners have been siting outside Cuadrilla’s Lancashire shale gas site waiting for the arrival of the drilling rig.

Nine anti-fracking campaigners locked themselves together, some under parked vehicles, outside Cuadrilla’s fracking site early this morning. One lane of Preston New Road was closed by police while they were removed. Photos: Cheryl Atkinson and Ami Roberts.
The protest coincided with a “Pirates’ day event” outside the Preston New Road site.
Lancashire Police later reported that nine people had been charged with obstructing the highway and an offence under the Trades Union and Labour Relations Act. Catherine Jackson, of Fleetwood, will appear before Blackpool Magistrates on 10 July 2017. David Eaton, of Blackpool, and Jonathan Black, of no fixed address, will be in court on 17 July. Liz Beck, of no fixed address, John Knox and Alan Mitchell, of Blackpool and Barbara Cookson, of Liverpool, appear on 24 July. Mark Taylor, of Blackpool and Lee Walsh, of no fixed address, are in court on 31 July.

Three campaigners were arrested after they chained themselves together outside the gates to UKOG’s oil exploration site in West Sussex. They were charged with using violence or intimidation on person, family or property to compel activity or abstention from lawful activity. A police spokesperson said the three were bailed to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 4 July 2017. More details and pictures
The protest coincided with a dawn vigil at the site entrance to mark World Environment Day.
